Orphan Mesa sits on its own in the sand hills of Ghost Ranch, somehow separated from the line of cliffs behind it. Old village stories used to warn naughty children that the monster from the Mesa was going to get them if they weren't good. Paleantologists eventually discovered a dinosaur skeleton imbedded in the mesa side...the village monster now lives in a museum. Weather patterns funnel from north, west, and east into this "Valley of the Shining Stone." When I head into this area to paint and photograph, I am often rewarded with dramatic lighting and shadows running across the rose and cream colored mesas...this is a painter's paradise.
