In the Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico exists a map of history, old roads that thread from the hot valley up into cool mountain meadows where ranchers, dryland farmers, and sheepherders made their way for summer grazing and farming. Occasionally, you'll find a fallen-down log cabin, now surrounded by forest encroaching into the hillside meadows. Many of these old roads wind up toward the Valle Grande, a magnificent series of valleys and meadows that are the remnant of a volcanic blow-out. There is a peace and restful beauty in these mountains, whispering trails of a way of life that is slowly fading.
