Up in New Mexico's Jemez Mountains, pockets of meadow hide in stands of aspen and Ponderosa. Trails meander through the shady woods and open into these glorious sun-drenched spaces. It could be 100 years ago. Aspen leaves rattle delicately in the breeze, the sun slants lower and lower, autumn leaves and grasses meld with late afternoon light to create a golden moment which my brush streaks to lay down on the canvas.
